You pictured how the project would go, how the conversation would land, how the year would feel by now. Reality arrived slightly, or significantly, different. The common advice is to "manage your expectations" — lower them, basically, and hope disappointment shrinks with them. That's a coping strategy, not an explanation. It doesn't tell you why the gap itself is so exhausting, or why it keeps happening even when you think you've already adjusted.

The gap between expected and actual isn't just an emotional letdown.
