The usual answer to burnout culture is a wellness one: breathe more, take a bath, practise gratitude. That misses the actual mechanism. Hustle culture isn't a discipline problem — it's a cognitive one. The research on attention, recovery and output doesn't support the idea that more hours produce more results. It supports something closer to the opposite: sustained overwork measurably degrades the attention and decision quality good work depends on, and the relationship between hours worked and output isn't a straight line — it's a curve that bends downward.
