Is A Creative Person Born or Made? What the Research Actually Shows

Is a creative person born or made? The debate has run for decades, and the honest answer from the research is unbalanced rather than fifty-fifty: creativity is mostly built, not inherited. Genetics plays a small supporting role, more like the cheap starter set of ingredients you're handed at the beginning. Everything else -- the practice, the environment, the risks you're willing to take with a half-formed idea -- is what actually decides how it turns out.

What the Twin Studies Actually Found

The clearest way to separate nature from nurture is to study twins -- people who share identical genes (identical twins) or roughly half their genes (fraternal twins), usually raised in the same household. If creativity were mostly genetic, identical twins would score far more similarly on creativity tests than fraternal twins. They don't, by much.

An early study by Frank Barron in 1972 tested 100 pairs of twins and found that the traits most closely tied to creative performance -- divergent thinking and originality -- showed almost no heritability. Later twin studies, including work by Nichols in 1978 and by Reznikoff and colleagues in 1973, reached much the same conclusion: little to no measurable heritability for the traits that actually drive creative output. A further 2015 study by Vinkhuyzen and colleagues put the genetic contribution to creative drawing ability at around 22-26% of the variation between people. A 2008 meta-analysis by psychologist Dean Keith Simonton estimated the genetic basis of creative performance at no more than 10-20%.

It's a bit like baking a cake from a family recipe card. The card -- your genes -- gives you a rough ingredients list and not much else. Whether the cake actually turns out well depends on the baking: the practice, the oven you've got access to, how many times you've tried and adjusted. Two people with the exact same recipe card can end up with wildly different results, because the card was never doing most of the work. Put plainly: on the most generous reading of the evidence, genetics accounts for a fifth of the picture. Everything else -- roughly three-quarters to four-fifths -- comes from what you do with the twenty years or so after you're born.

What the Genes Actually Do

Researchers have looked for specific "creativity genes" and found weak, inconsistent links at best. Genes involved in dopamine regulation (DRD2 and DRD4) and serotonin (TPH1) show mild correlations with divergent thinking, but one analysis found these genes explained only around 9% of the variance in creative performance. A gene doesn't make you creative. At most, it nudges which activities you're drawn to in the first place -- which then shapes how much you practise, which is where the real development happens. Think of it less like a light switch and more like a faint signpost: it tips you gently towards music or drawing or building things, but whether you ever walk down that road is entirely down to what happens next.

Where Creativity Actually Comes From

  1. Deliberate practice. Creative output improves with structured repetition, in exactly the same way a technical skill does. There is no shortcut around hours logged.
  2. A trainable skillset, not a fixed trait. A one-year creativity training programme published in PLOS One, covering attention, divergent thinking and convergent thinking, measurably increased concept production and creative flexibility after three months.
  3. Environment and permission. Access to varied experiences, tools and a household or workplace that tolerates being wrong all correlate with sustained creative output into adulthood.
  4. Not being punished for standing out. Research on primary-school classrooms has repeatedly found that teachers report supporting creativity while actually preferring the most conforming students -- and that children become measurably more risk-averse around ages 9-10, a pattern sometimes called the "fourth-grade slump". Whether that risk-aversion gets reinforced or interrupted has a lasting effect on adult creative output.

Why This Matters More Than the Debate Itself

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 ranks creative thinking as the fourth most important core skill in the workplace today, and one employers expect to matter even more by 2030. Closer to home, the CIPD -- the UK's professional body for HR and people development -- lists creative thinking among the core skills British employers say they'll need more of as the workforce reskills. If creativity were mostly fixed at birth, that would be a strange thing for employers to be actively trying to build. It's on those lists because it's trainable, and businesses have worked out that training it pays off.

  1. Get out of your comfort zone. Unfamiliar tasks stretch creative thinking in ways routine never will.
  2. Treat failure as data, not verdict. Failure is a structural part of trying anything genuinely new, not a signal to stop.
  3. Collaborate on purpose. Trading ideas with people who think differently to you surfaces angles you wouldn't reach alone.
  4. Practise deliberately, not just often. Random exposure to creative work matters less than structured, repeated attempts with feedback.
  5. Protect real breaks. Stepping away resets attention and produces the connection you couldn't force by grinding on it.
